Halving

Halving, also known as halvening, refers to a predetermined reduction in the rate at which new units of a cryptocurrency are generated and added to the blockchain. Halving is a feature of many cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, and is designed to control the supply of the cryptocurrency and to maintain its value.

In Bitcoin, halving occurs approximately every four years and reduces the reward that miners receive for adding new blocks to the blockchain. When Bitcoin was first created, the block reward was 50 BTC, but it has been halved twice since then and is currently 6.25 BTC.

Halving is intended to help ensure the long-term stability and value of the cryptocurrency by controlling the rate at which new units are added to circulation. It is based on the assumption that the value of the cryptocurrency will increase over time and that the reduced supply will help to maintain its value.
